Short periods of rest are fine if you are comfortable, but avoid sitting for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Try to get up and change position every half hour. Gentle walking around the house may ease lower back stiffness.

If you lie down, try supporting your legs with a pillow underneath your knees if you are on your back, or between them when on your side. There is no 'correct' position for resting, just see what's comfortable!

To reduce inflammation, use an icepack ( wrapped in a cloth to protect your skin ) on your back for 5 minutes, and then replace this with a hot damp cloth. Alternate between the two every 5 minutes for 25 minutes. This can be repeated 3 times a day. Be wary of getting into a hot bath. This has no lasting benefit, and does not support your lower back. It can be difficult getting out again and the heat dilates blood vessels flooding the area with inflammation and aggravating the problem. A shower is a safer option.

A pharmacist can advise you on the best combination of anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medication.
